Introducing your students to an author is a wonderful way to get them excited about reading and writing. By sharing what I do, I hope to inspire kids to create their own stories and share their uniquely special point of view with the world.
The more buzz you create prior to an author event, the more engaged your students will be. Inviting a speaker to come to your school takes time and money. If you are students are interested and attentive, your organization will get the best bang for their buck.
If possible, introduce the author to the students before the visit by reading the author's books in the days/weeks prior. A list of my books can be found here. I and many other authors also have free activity pages that you can download. Think of other activities that might tie in with your speaker's work. Since my series Flubby the Cat revolves around pets, maybe have the children draw or write about their perfect pet before the event. Or have a stuffed animal "pet show."
